Praise of the doubt – The New Exhibition at Punta della Dogana

mostra-2011-punta-della-dogana-veneziaThe new venue of Punta della Dogana will be closed during March to allow the mounting of a new exhibition curated by Caroline Bourgeois, “Praise of the doubt”. The official opening date will be April 10, 2011.

“Mapping the studio”, the exhibition that opened the new spaces bought by Francois Pinault at Punta della Dogana, a great success that has seen more than 500,000 visitors last year, will then be dismantled to leave place for 60 art-works that will compose “Praise of Doubt”: a collection of artistic productions that have as common denominator, the investigation of the sphere of disturbance, the questioning of certainty in terms of identity, and the relationship between intimate and personal dimension.

Twenty artists will be on display and more than 30 the unpublished works.
Among the artists on show, as well as Maurizio Cattelan, Jeff Koons and Jeff Bauman, will be included: Adel Abdessemed, Marcel Broodthaers, Dan Flavin, Subodh Gupta, David Hammons, Roni Horn, Thomas Houseago, Donald Judd, Edward Kienholz, Paul McCarthy, Sigmar Polke, Thomas Shutte, Elaine Sturtevant and Chen Zen.

Creations of two young artists, Julie Mehretu and Tatiana Trouvé, will also be produced specifically for the site of Punta della Dogana. “The art must be considered a living thing“, said new managing director of Palazzo Grassi, Martin Bethenod, and in this sense must be read the decision to involve the artists themselves, or their widows or specialists of their production in case they are no longer alive, in the layout, installation and the concept of the exhibition.
The two exhibition venues of Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana will take from this show two different orientations moving on parallel but separate ways: the first one is the ideal place for smaller and short-term exhibitions, while the second will aim to the models of foreign countries  and it will be given an impression more like the great centres museums such as MoMA and the Pompidou Centre.
