“Firma” by Janez Janša, Janez Janša and Janez Janša.

e_0836_04Project of the Slovene collective with the title “Firma” (in italian: “signature”). The authors, following strictly the apposite bureaucratic practices, in 2007 have changed their own names in the one of the prime minister of Slovenia Janez Jansa. From that moment all their works, all their private and public business, have been signed and conducted with this name. The exhibition is focused on the paternity concept of the authors.

The Centro Espositivo Pubblico Sloveno di Venezia is glad to present the project of the Slovenian artist’s collective Janez Janša, Janez Janša and Janez Janša, with the titla “Firma” presented for the first time at the Biblioteca Central della Carinzia “Dr. Franc Susnik” of Ravne na Koroskem, the previous September 24th.

The exhibition focuses on the role of the author in its works: what does mean in our society create an art work? How is it possible to affirm the artist figure when his work is contested in the different societies, institutions, in the business and all which are the influences that derive from?

Who is the person who can see his work recognised? These, and other questions, are tackled through a series of 27 paintings, created by Viktor Bernik, anyone represents the signature of “Janez Jansa” with huge applications in black acrylic on a white background.

But the author is not Viktor Bernik. The authors of the artistic project are  Janez Janša, Janez Janša and Janez Janša, it means the artists who commissioned the triptychs and who applied their own signatures.

The three paintings of the first triptych are signed by the artist Janez Jansa. The second is signed by another Janez Jansa, so the signature, formally different, is read Janez Jansa though. The third is signed by the artist who uses the name Janez Jansa only as pseudonym. The fourth triptych is signed by the three artists with homographic signatures, but different from the formal point of view of the contents.
One of the Janez Jansa has changed his own name in Ziga Kariz in November 2008. The other, born in Italy, by the Italian law, is called Davide Grassi. The same for the third Janez Jansa, in Croatia he has the name of Emil Hrvatin.

For this cycle of three triptychs with variations in their signatures doesn’t finish in the fourth triptych. The fifth indeed, is signed Emil Hrvatin, the sixth by Davide Grassi and the seventh by Ziga Kariz. The eighth is signed by the three authors with their own baptism names. The last is a kind of official Slovene triptych, its truthfulness can be recognised by the registry office of the Slovenian Republic, is signed by Janez Janša, Janez Janša and Janez Janša.

The goal of “Firma” is to think about the role of the author of a project, putting it in front of the person who realises the work. The artists are wondering who is the author: the one who realises or the one who just signed it? And as consequence, who is the signatory person of the work: Hrvatin is the same author as Grassi is when they sign Janez Jansa? The tension created between the signatures\images and the signatures\initials puts the question of the paternity of the works, but also of the author rights.
