san clemente_isolaAs far as the archive collections are concerned, the first inventory allowed several scholars to access the entries listed in recent years. Currently, the ministerial project ‘Carte da legare’ (‘Papers to Bind’) is in progress to list and categorize administrative and medical entries via an application software which runs on a national level, in order to reach an inventory standardization of the Italian archives.

There are a collection of books from San Servolo (which include volumes from the 16th century) and San Clemente, a small collection of books from the 18th century from the Fatebenefratelli, the Christian order that ran the hospital in San Servolo from 1725 to 1902, and are stored in two 19th century libraries. Another remarkable collection consists of over 13,500 glass plates depicting the images of the patients, together with several photo albums.

The Psychiatric Hospital Museum of San Servolo was also set up in order to recover and restore the historical memory all of the artifacts belonging to the former Psychiatric Hospital, and to effectively represent the history of this institution. Professor Diego Fontanari and Mario Galzigna are in charge of the scientific and historical aspects of the Museum, while the Architect Barbara Accordi is in charge of the exhibition gallery. The Museum opened on May 20, 2006.

The following collections are included in the Archive of the Foundation:

1. ‘San Servolo Psychiatric Provincial Hospital’ (ranging from 1st August, 1718 to 21st April, 1988).
2. ‘San Clemente Psychiatric Provincial Hospital of Venice’ (from 1873 to 1987).
3. ‘SS. Giovanni and Paolo Provincial Civil Hospital of Venice’ (mental illness hospital section) (from 1825 to 1873).
4. ‘Administration of the Venetian Central Insane Asylums of San Servolo and San Clemente in the Veneto Region 1904 – 1931’ (from 1903 to 1935).
